The Hmong Medical Corpus: a biomedical corpus for a minority language

چکیده
Abstract Biomedical communication is an area that increasingly benefits from natural language processing (NLP) work. named entity recognition (NER) in particular provides a foundation for advanced NLP applications, such as automated medical question-answering and translation services. However, while large body of biomedical documents are available array languages, most work NER remains English, with the remainder official national or regional languages. Minority languages so far remain underexplored area. The Hmong language, minority sizable populations several countries without status anywhere, represents exceptional challenge effective contexts. Taking advantage number government-produced information Hmong, we have developed first entity-annotated corpus resource-poor language. Medical Corpus contains 100,535 tokens 4554 entities (NEs) three UMLS semantic types: diseases/syndromes, signs/symptoms, parts/organs/organ components. Furthermore, subset annotated word position parts speech, representing gold-standard dataset publicly Hmong. methodology presented readily reproducible approach creation NE-annotated corpora other

Corpus Design For Biomedical Natural Language Processing
This paper classifies six publicly available biomedical corpora according to various corpus design features and characteristics. We then present usage data for the six corpora. We show that corpora that are carefully annotated with respect to structural and linguistic characteristics and that are distributed in standard formats are more widely used than corpora that are not. These findings have...
متن کاملCorpus Resources and Minority Language Engineering
Low density languages are typically viewed as those for which few language resources are available. Work relating to low density languages is becoming a focus of increasing attention within language engineering (e.g. Charoenporn, 1997, Hall and Hudson, 1997, Somers, 1997, Nirenberg and Raskin, 1998, Somers, 1998). However, much work related to low density languages is still in its infancy, or w...
متن کاملMetadiscourse Markers in a Corpus of Learner Language: The Case of Iranian EFL Learners
Different issues have been probed in learner corpus research since the late 1980s.However, taking the im- portance of meta discourse markers (MDMs) in signposting academic discourse, their use in Iranian EFL learners‟ academic essays is an area of research in need of a more serious analysis. Contributing to this line of investigation, this paper reports a corpus-based study of the use of MDMs i...
متن کاملAutomatically Building a Corpus for a Minority Language from the Web
We present an approach to language-speciic query-based sampling which, given a single document in a target language, can nd many more examples of documents in that language, by automatically constructing queries to access such documents on the world wide web. We propose a number of methods for building search queries to quickly obtain documents in the target language. They perform accurately an...
متن کاملThe ASK Corpus - a Language Learner Corpus of Norwegian as a Second Language
In our paper we present the design and interface of ASK, a language learner corpus of Norwegian as a second language which contains essays collected from language tests on two different proficiency levels as well as personal data from the test takers. In addition, the corpus also contains texts and relevant personal data from native Norwegians as control data. The texts as well as the personal ...
